Hit The Ground Running – The Cover Art

By dkpresents

The P and I just returned from a long weekend in Eugene, where the US Olympic Trials are just wrapping up. Eugene is known as ‘Tracktown USA’ and it has more than lived up to that reputation over the last couple of weeks.

As Tim Layden wrote of the Oregon track fans on SI.com this week, “They cheer a sprint result and then look at the wind gauge. It’s totally cool that Hayward Field — think Fenway Park for track, only with a whole lot of swooshes everywhere — is packed every day. It’s even cooler than Hayward fans know what’s going on. They cheer splits. These people bring their “A” game to a track meet.”

We didn’t make it out to any of the Trials, but we did slog our way through Eugene’s annual 10K – the Butte To Butte. Here’s some of the music we used to train for that race…

Here’s the front cover:

Here’s the front gatefold:

Here’s the inside gatefold:

[Copy reads: Left to Right: 1) Legendary Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman 2) The waffle iron Bowerman used to make the first pair of Nike shoes 3) Bowerman and star pupil Steve Prefontaine 4) Prefontaine 5) & 6) Oregon track greats Alberto Salazar and Rudy Chapa, who teamed to help the Ducks win the 1977 NCAA Track & Field Championship 7) Oregon’s cathedral of running - Hayward Field]

Here’s the back inside:

Here’s the back:

[Copy reads: There are many theories about what makes a great running mix, but here at the dk presents... laboratories, we’ve determined that a non-stop, balls-to-the-wall, 120mph mix with a lot of adrenaline and few pauses is the way to go. So stretch out, strap yourself in, and let’s go for a run...]

  1. Prefontaine Foo Says:

uh…how’d the 10K go for you dk?

  2. dkpresents Says:

Let’s just say I didn’t set the course record.

I stopped about 100 yards short of the finish line to catch up with my old friend Matt for about 10 minutes. If you subtract that time, I ran it in 1:10:00 or so, if you include that, I ran around 1:20:00. Either way, I’m looking forward to improving on that time next year…

One MASSIVE blister notwithstanding, I had a great time, so it went well. Thanks for asking.

  3. Arlo Chingaderas Says:

    Nice work, man!

    Dope disclaimer, too.

    Gotta run…

  4. dkpresents Says:

The P was kind enough to point out that 2 men in the 80-90 year old age group, as well as a handful of girls in the 5-10 year old age group, actually finished faster than me. Ouch…

  5. Jo in LA Says:

Who’s side is she on anyway? Well, I couldn’t run a 10k if I was being chased so kudos to you! Can’t believe you want to do it again! Maybe it’s like childbirth, you forget the pain by the time you do it again.

  6. jkg Says:

  7. dkpresents Says:

Am I tripping, or did you just suggest A Flock Of Seagulls??

  8. Prefontaine Foo Says:

next he’s going to suggest “where the streets have no name”.

Although, putting M/A/R/R/S on here does set the precedent.

  9. dkpresents Says:

What about Pink Floyd’s ‘Run Like Hell’??

    I did on Friday…
