I would have to say this is a good list for people starting out getting into country. A couple of other records that potentially convert people are, if I may:

Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road
New Riders of the Purple Sage - NRPS
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Shall the Circle Be Unbroken
The Byrds - Sweetheart of the Rodeo

I'm familiar with Johnny Cash's personal history, and I've never described him in any terms that come close to equating to "prison dweller". To say that his favorite topics were Murder, Love and God is to make a point that Cash himself acknowledged - a three disc compilation of his work, released in 2000 and produced by JC, was called Love God Murder.

Please don't put words in my mouth, or before we know it, Kathryn DeLorean Swamp Dogg Cash will be up in my face threatening a legal enema...

Nice page, but still promotes the legend of Johnny Cash as prison dweller. Which wasn't the case.

From w-pedia--

'Although Cash carefully cultivated a romantic outlaw image, he never served a prison sentence. Despite landing in jail seven times for misdemeanors, each stay lasted only a single night. His most infamous run-in with the law occurred while on tour in 1965, when he was arrested by a narcotics squad in El Paso, Texas. The officers suspected that he was smuggling heroin from Mexico, but it was prescription narcotics and amphetamines that the singer had hidden inside his guitar case. Because they were prescription drugs rather than illegal narcotics, he received a suspended sentence.'

Great point about Hank Williams. You're right, any Greatest Hits (and there are plenty out there) will hit the high points just fine. I happen to only own the Complete HW so that sort of forced my hand. I do think most of the stuff on the box is pretty good, with the major exception of the stuff he did with his wife Audrey, which is GAWDAWFUL. The woman couldn't sing a note...

Like everything else, country has 5 or 10% great stuff rising up to the top of a heap of muck. I can see you were paying attention...

IMO a more boiled-down Hank Williams collection is more "essential" than the complete collection. He was very prolific and he did wind up reusing stuff. Listening to the whole career in a big gulp kind of diminishes it.

Also, an essential link in the rock/country thing was Dylan doing Blonde on Blonde, John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline in Nashville. Nashville Skyline is hard to listen to, but JWH is something else and Blonde on Blonde is in between
