Motorhead - album

Lemmy Kilmister is a hairy bundle of profound contradictions. By all accounts charming and polite to a fault, he’s also a crude misogynist and the founder of the self-proclaimed “dirtiest rock & roll band in the world.” After getting kicked out of prog/metal pioneers Hawkwind, Kilmister formed Motorhead in 1975 with an eye towards playing the kind of bare-bones biker rock that was kicking around his speed-enhanced skull. In spite of an ever-changing line-up, this three piece band of degenerates have rarely deviated from their original template of amped-up, pulverizing rock & roll. This blueprint would serve other bands as well: it’s debatable if heavy metal would have found its voice without Motorhead leading the way.

Released in 1984, No Remorse is Motorhead’s definitive greatest hits package. Featuring b-sides, rarities, and live material – in addition to a wide selection of the group’s finest work – this compilation serves equally well as an introduction for the uninitiated or a one-stop grab-bag for existing fans. Because the band has maintained such a consistent sound over the years, the songs collected here fit together perfectly. Lemmy sings (is that the right word for it?) throughout like a man being dragged behind a speeding automobile. His vocal urgency lends every song an undeniable sincerity that other rockers can only wistfully dream of. Consequently, there’s not a relaxed moment to be found here – ‘Ace Of Spades’ is a full-throttle blast of testosterone and menace, ‘Bomber’ rages at a pace that implies pending liftoff, and ‘Motorhead’ is an undisguised ode to the joy of methamphetamines.

Lemmy originally wanted to name the group ‘Bastard’, which would have worked just as well. Because no matter what you call these guys, their music is an uncompromising blast of hell-fire that will singe your eyeballs and leave you thirsty for more.

I’d like to imagine that those covers were made out the hides that Lemmy skinned from 1,000 rock posers, but probably not, huh??
